"Proximity" is a poem from the viewpoint of a man who has recently been left by his woman. The poem begins with Ashbery commenting on seeing the woman at the carnival. He uses this to introduce the conflict between himself and a lover. He then moves to trying to entice the woman to come back to him. He tries to "fulfill" her "dream" by giving away his new gloves and fixing the problem they have in their relationship. Throughout this, Ashbery uses a very sad tone to show that he is heartbroken over the loss. The second half of this poem is when Ashbery shows the hopelessness and loneliness he feels without the woman. To him, it is like a wilderness that he is lost in alone. This shows that he is still in love with the woman and feels lost and alone without her, no matter how much is around him. He begs the woman to stay, or at least pay him to stay alone. This makes it seem as if it is a struggle for him to stay alone, something worth getting paid for. The narrator of this poem is utterly lonely without the love of his life. Ashbery is trying to display the heartbreak one goes through after breaking up with the love.
